Discussion: Dishwasher > Double Drawer Dishwashers
1 of 67

I am having to buy a double drawer dishwasher because I replaced my counter top several years ago and I am about 1/4" to tight.  The installer said the double drawer would fit.  Has anyone bought one?  What brand?  Pros & Cons?

I really need some input here.

Thanks.

Tippe_Cox,

Did you find a well-recommended, well-reviewed drawer dishwasher?

I've been considering one myself, but have been discouraged by the lack of reviews on this configuration.

I read several people reviews and they either loved them or they hated them and this included the Kitchen Aid, Fisher Paykel, and the Sears brand made by Whirlpool.  I actually found more reviews on the Fisher & Paykel than the others.  I have ordered the Fisher & Paykel  DD605 and it should be here next week.  The reason I ordered it was because  (1) I understand they were the first to make the double drawer dishwasher, (2)  I talked to several repair people in my area and they had had no problems with them - if they were installed correctly, (3)  My installer has owned one for several years, and (4) I could get one alot cheaper because my husband works for a company also owns appliance/plumbing stores and they said I would love it.  So, we shall see.

The one thing that I am really not pleased about is they are not warrantied by local repair shops but by the Sears network of service people.  There are any number of people who will and can work on them but not until the warranity expires.  So if you have a warranity problem, you call an 800 number and talk to whomever answers and she/he makes the appointment for you.  That bothers me but I guess that is the way it is.

I know I haven't been much help.

Purchased kitchen aid about a year ago and so far so good. I love the double drawers and operation is easy and quiet. Did buy the extended warranty just in case, however I am sure as soon as it expires it will break... time will tell.
Good Luck.

how do the work?
Are there two motors and two pumps?

Or does one pump run both drawers?

How does the capacity compare to a "regular"?

OK - we just ordered the Fisher-Pakel double drawer.  As empty nesters, it's the perfect product logically.  Nothing for me to report, of course, but would welcome comments.

thanks angelo -

How do they work?
Are there two pumps - one for each drawer?

Yep.  Otherwise they could not have independent cycles.

So was the Sears salesman lying today when he told me, "You have a computer card error.  That will cost you $400."  My 3 years old Whirlpool which was a CR Best Buy when I got it from Sears in 2005, is now stopped forever in 'Clean', and is pulsing 7 times, hesitating then repeating the 7 pulses ad infinitum, whether the door is shut or empty.

The only thing I can get it to do, after trying EVERY cycle is to CANCEL, and it faithfully decrements the counter and I can hear the pump pushing out the water.

Is there anything I can do?  The Sears folks will only give me a 4 hour window for service, and I need to have an exact appointment, since like 95% they do business with, I work during the day.

How can they be so imperious?  What's the truth about this problem?

Alice,

I can't tell from here whether you circuit board is broken or not, and since service can vary so much from place to place and store to store, I'm not sure if it's so unusual to service an item within a "window" for Sears. I know that other companies, such as telephone and cable, that's not unusual.

As angelo said, we can't tell from here what is wrong.

And the fact that one machine has a failure doesn't really indicate much.

Did you REALLY expect that Sears would arrive right when you wanted them?

What do you base these expectations on?

oh, why this question in a thread about double drawer dishwashers?

I have had Fisher & Paykel dishdrawers for five years.  I purchased two top drawers (no bottom units) and had them installed on either side of my sink.  They are terrific and I have had no service issues.  The only failure has been that one of the hinges (on a glass rack) has worn out.  F & P got its start as an autoclave company; the drawers are well designed.

I believe that correct installation is essential: my drawers were placed by a F & P trained technician.  I've never had any leaks.  I rotate the drawers for uniformity.

Today I broke a glass when I dropped it against a plate.  I was able to take the entire drawer apart and get all of the glass out.

I routinely clean my drawers in the above manner.  The first time I took the drawer apart to clean it I got confused about how to return the pieces to their proper places.  I spoke to a woman at the 800 number who was in New Zealand, where the drawers are manufactured.  She was great!

I have had a fisher paykel dish drawer top and bottom for six years.  I have had to have them serviced 3 times since installed.  This last time the service agent told me it just wasn't worth having them fixed.  He recommended buying a bosch, any model.

I liked the drawers because there are only 3 of us and it was convenient to run just one at a time, but I have already sunk an additional $400 in repairs, and the last visit would have been at least $700.

I think it is important when having them installed that the service agent know exactly what they are doing.  Some of my problems I feel were caused by poor installation.

Hi Tippe, My two cents on dish drawers. I love the idea of having dish drawers and will continue to purchase dish drawers in the future. They are also very efficient but I will not purchase a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher again. I've had it repaired twice all ready and it is acting up again. Another note on installation. This dishwasher fits into a standard space. Check out the actual dimensions of the unit if you decide to proceed with a purchase of a dish drawer. Heidi

I bought the Fisher Paykel a few years ago and had it repaired 3 times in 18 months, then the extended warranty expired and I continued to have problems with it. One drawer or the other fills up with water and won't drain when the other drawer is operating. I finally checked them out on blog sites by owners, they all seemed to have the same problem. Perhaps the have improved them over the last couple of years. I really, really love the 2 drawer concept expecially when you only have a light load and still have the option to use both at the same time for big loads. I'm looking for a drawer dishwasher that's anything other than the Fisher Paykel.

Hello,

Which Kitchen Aid model did you purchase and does it still run well?  I need to replace my dishwasher and, since there are only 2 of us in the household, a drawer dishwasher is a great concept.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

A.

The drawer dishwashers have two motors that work each drawer.  A standard dishwasher uses about 7 gallons per wash where as the drawer dishwashers only use about 2-4 gallons per wash so a lot of water savings in the end.  Each drawer holds 5 place settings (a place setting is 5 dishes) in the KitchenAid and Maytag models.  I have also heard of people using the drawer dishwasher as a cooler too for parties, they are insulated so throw ice and your choice of beverage and you got yourself a cooler.  Hope that helps.

Hello,

You are lucky that you've only had to have 3 repairs on your
dish drawers.

I have had mine for seven years+ and LUCKILY have a Centerpoint
Energy repair plan. I have had 30+ repairs and Centerpoint  has
been very good to fix things that really were not covered.

I love the dish drawers for load  versatility, however would
NEVER buy a Fisher Paykel again!  After looking at reviews,
although this company was the innovator of drawers, they
still cannot get it right !!

When I contacted Fisher Paykel 2 years ago in regards to
the 30+ service calls they were extremely rude!  They
offered me $300 off of a set of new drawers!  I paid $1600-1700
for these several years ago and it has been very disappointing.

I purchased the drawers from Warner Stellion, does anyone
know how well they follow though on their extended warranties
in regards to these breaking so often?

By the way my old dishwasher from Sears that had only cost
$350, did a much better job cleaning also!  The drawers have
always left a film on glassware.

I just really think that people should complain more directly
to that company.  They are charging way too much for a
bad product, I would never recommend one to anyone!
